Getting started — How to open an MD Direct Trade account

Opening an MD Direct Trade account is easy. In just a few steps, you can be up and investing:

  1. . If you don’t have a My MD account, you can .
  2. Click MD Direct Trade in the “Total Portfolio” section.
  3. Select one of the options and complete the process.

Transferring your existing MD stock assets into the MD Direct Trade account online follows the same process.

Why would I consider MD Direct Trade?

If you are interested in investing in stocks directly and want to do your own research, without advice from an MD Advisor, then MD Direct Trade may be for you. Its low cost, simple interface, and comprehensive and sophisticated stock and bond research and trading tools make for a powerful combination. It will also appeal to investors who work with an MD Advisor, but want to do some of their own stock trading, without advice.

To open an MD Direct Trade account, will I need to have any documents in hand?

Yes, when opening an MD Direct Trade account, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • Valid identification
    • Upload a scan of, for example, the front and back of your driver’s licence, or your passport showing your signature and picture.
  • Recent financial statement
    • Upload this if you are transferring holdings from an external financial institution.
  • A void cheque in your name
    • Upload a scan of your void cheque so that banking information is on file.
  • Shareholder numbers (for joint accounts)
    • If you are opening a joint cash account or a joint RESP account, you’ll need the shareholder numbers of any other owners.
  • MD account numbers (for transfers)
    • If you are transferring holdings from any existing MD accounts, you’ll need those account numbers.

What account types are available on MD Direct Trade?

MD Direct Trade offers many options to suit your investment needs, all of them available in U.S. dollars, including:

Are MD funds or MDPIM Pools available on MD Direct Trade?

Yes, all MD funds (Series D), with the exception of MD Stable Income Fund, are now available on MD Direct Trade, including the MDPIM Emerging Markets Equity Pool.

What other investments are available on MD Direct Trade?

You can invest in a wide variety of investments, including stocks, non-MD mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, bonds, new issues/initial public offerings and guaranteed investment certificates.

What is the commission on mutual fund trades?

There is no commission if you place your mutual fund trade online. If you place your trade by telephone, mutual fund orders are $45 per trade. Regular mutual fund fees may apply. As well, an early redemption fee will apply if you sell or switch your mutual fund within 90 days of purchase (see the MD Direct Trade schedule of fees and commissions link above).
