This tool uses annual compound growth for its calculations.
This tool assumes that contributions are made at the beginning of the indicated period.
The expected rate of return used for calculating progress toward indicated goals is net of inflation.
This tool does not account for foreign currency fluctuations on foreign investments.
For all savings goals, excluding education savings, the goal amount is required at the end of the period.
For retirement goals, the same expected rate of return is used for calculations before and after retirement. Also, life expectancy is defaulted to 90 years. This is used to calculate the number of years that will be spent in retirement.
Other sources of retirement income (Canada Pension Plan income, Old Age Security benefits, etc.) are not included in the retirement goal calculation.
Contribution limits for registered accounts (RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs, etc.) are not considered.
Government grants and bonds (Canada Education Savings Grant, Canada Learning Bond, etc.) are not included as part of the education savings goal calculation.
For education savings goals, it is assumed that the amount required for each period is withdrawn at the beginning of that period.
