MD Financial Management Signs Climate Change Declaration

On October 26, 2017, MD Financial Management, along with 25 of Canada’s other asset managers, signed a declaration supporting improved disclosure by Canada’s public companies about the impact they have on climate change. The declaration was prepared by the Responsible Investment Association (RIA) in conjunction with Finance Montreal. The signed declaration can be found on the Finance Montreal website.

Increased disclosure by Canada’s public companies will enable all active investors in Canada to more accurately evaluate climate change, and its associated cost, as part of their risk assessments.

Going carbon-neutral


MD Financial Management Inc. offices are Carbonzero Certified. We have achieved carbon neutrality relative to the energy consumption for all our buildings across the country.

Here’s how we did it

  • MD hired a third-party company to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its head office and all its regional offices. The total was up to 2,414 tonnes of CO2.
  • With the purchase of carbon offsets to compensate for those greenhouse gas emissions, all MD buildings have been designated carbon-neutral.

Green buildings

In 2015, the Canada Green Building Council awarded LEED® Gold Status for Commercial Interiors to the redesigned MD head office in Ottawa and MD’s regional office in Edmonton. The LEED rating system is recognized worldwide as the gold standard for green building design. From reduced energy and water use to indoor environmental quality, these MD offices are models of environmental sustainability.


Operational efficiency

At MD, it’s important to us that we run our business efficiently. Here’s how we do it.

Telework

Many MD employees work from home, thus cutting down on commuting and its associated carbon emissions. Telework also helps increase productivity, results in savings on office space and operating costs, and contributes to greater employee engagement.

Business travel

Our employees make extensive use of Smart Boards and video conferencing, reducing the need for business travel.

Alternative transportation incentive

We also offer our head-office employees a monthly incentive if they leave their vehicle at home and choose to walk, run, cycle or take public transit to work instead.

Recycling storage and collection

Our recycling program includes paper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic. We perform a waste audit every three years, and have one of the highest ratings among Ottawa companies for diversion of recyclables from the waste stream.
