Stay fraud aware

Fraudsters sometimes create websites or send emails and texts that claim to be MD Financial Management Inc. (MD) or its subsidiaries and Scotiabank®. To protect your information, avoid clicking on links from unknown emails, text messages, search engines or online ads.

Only sign in by typing www.md.ca or https://login.mdm.ca using a bookmark to one of these URLs or through our mobile app. These are the only valid ways to log in. Never follow a link you receive via phone call, email or text message.

Your security is our priority. As fraud tactics evolve, we continually improve our security protections and will share with you the information you need to stay safe. Remember, MD will never:

  • ask for your PIN, online banking password or one-time verification codes.
  • ask you to transfer money to “protect your account.” Fraudsters may claim your account is compromised and direct you to move funds to a “safe” account—this is a scam.
  • request remote access to your computer or mobile device.
  • pressure you to act immediately.
  • ask for personal information through unsolicited emails or text messages or send unexpected links.

How to protect yourself

  • Be aware that fraudsters will often spoof (impersonate) legitimate phone numbers on call display, making it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate organization. Never give personal or financial information to incoming callers, and when in doubt, hang-up and call back at a verified number.
  • Use unique and strong passwords for each account.
  • Avoid clicking unfamiliar links.
  • Verify the source of requests.
  • Use official websites and bookmark for reuse.
  • Enable account alerts to monitor activity.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication.

If you notice unusual account activity or think that you’ve fallen for a scam, take these steps:

  • Call your MD Advisor* or MD Client Services immediately at 1 800 267-2332, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
  • Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local police department.

Register to join us for a fraud focused, live webinar on February 25 at 12 p.m. ET

For additional tips, please review MD’s Online Security page.

We prioritize your security and will never engage in practices that compromise your trust. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and reach out to us directly.
