Our executive leadership team is comprised of experienced leaders who bring to MD a wide range of expertise and skills from many industries and disciplines, including finance, technology and organizational effectiveness.


Brian Peters

Brian Peters

President and CEO

Brian Peters provides the vision and leadership that MD Financial Management needs to deliver on its mandate of helping Canada’s physicians and their family members achieve financial well-being throughout their lives and careers.

In 2006, Mr. Peters was chosen by the CMAH Board as the President and CEO of MD, based on his strong vision for the organization. Mr. Peters remained in his role following MD’s acquisition by Scotiabank. His firm belief that MD provides the best offering for physicians at all stages of their lives drives him to seek new opportunities to give MD clients a stronger financial future, and continue to build stronger partnerships with the Canadian Medical Association and the provincial and territorial medical associations—all with the goal of delivering more significant value to members.

Mr. Peters started his career as a financial advisor at RBC Dominion Securities where he moved steadily up the ranks to become President and CEO of RBC Dain Rauscher. There, he applied his strategic and business leadership to acquisition-based growth strategies.

Mr. Peters graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Business Administration.

Mike Gassewitz

Mike Gassewitz

Executive Vice President, Client Solutions

Mike Gassewitz is responsible for anticipating and meeting the needs of MD clients with best-in-class products and services. An experienced CEO and marketing leader who has more than 20 years in the technology industry, he is responsible for driving product strategy, marketing programs and sales integration, as well as championing new opportunities to bring further value to Canada’s physicians and their family members.

Before joining MD, Mr. Gassewitz had an accomplished career in telecommunications and internet security. He built highly motivated teams and achieved outstanding success at Newbridge Networks and Alcatel-Lucent, and was CEO of Meriton Networks and Kindsight.

As the former CEO of an internet start-up, Mr. Gassewitz knows what it takes to be agile and to lead and compete with intensity. This enables him to drive product strategy that enables more physicians to benefit from MD's best-in-class investment expertise, seize timely opportunities, pay lower fees and taxes, and achieve greater financial security.

As well as being a seasoned executive, Mr. Gassewitz is a professional who holds a bachelor of applied science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Daniel Labonté

Daniel Labonté

Executive Vice President, Client Experience

Daniel Labonté leads MD’s national team of highly committed and skilled financial consultants, portfolio managers, specialists and support staff. He believes that leadership and continuous development of people is the key to delivering on MD’s commitment to operate in our clients’ best interests.

Mr. Labonté has gained deep leadership experience in the private, not-for-profit and public sectors over the past 30 years. Before joining MD, he led a number of international collaboration initiatives, including with the government of the People’s Republic of China. In his 15 years with MD Financial Management, Mr. Labonté has led Marketing, Information Technology, Strategic Initiative and Financial Practice divisions. He has been actively involved in a number of mergers and acquisitions, including and Saxon Funds, and led Stratos Wealth Management, a successful pilot offering of financial services for non-physicians. He also managed MD’s first Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Saxon Financial Inc.

Mr. Labonté earned a Bachelor of Science degree and an MBA from the University of Ottawa. He also holds a Post-Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University and is a member of the International Coaching Federation.

Michelle Masson

Michelle Masson

Executive Vice President, Early Career Segment

Michelle Masson’s Early Career Segment team is responsible for the design and delivery of services that meet the needs of medical students, residents and early career physicians. The team helps clients through critical life transitions, from medical school through to the early stages of establishing a practice, and enables them to live their best lives today and tomorrow.

Ms. Masson also leads the highly skilled teams that focus on business strategy development, talent management and IT. Together, Ms. Masson and her teams influence MD’s strategy, performance, leadership and culture, engaging employees and empowering them to deliver extraordinary client experiences and strong business results.

Since joining MD in 2009, Ms. Masson has been a driving force in the organization’s growth and transformation. She has a passion for new and collaborative ways of working, and her integrated approach has helped unlock the organization’s full potential and continue to create an environment that benefits employees and clients: MD’s employees build satisfying careers and clients build trusted, long-term relationships with employees. Ms. Masson has also led new initiatives within MD, including developing the organization’s first dedicated Innovation Hub. Many new strategic approaches have sprung from this Hub, notably the business focus on the early career client segment.

Before joining MD, Ms. Masson enjoyed a 15-year career in the technology sector, primarily in strategic planning and human resources. While chief executive officer of the consulting firm Reid Eddison Inc., she and her partners worked with early stage high-tech executives to build strategy-driven, sustainable companies.

Ms. Masson is a graduate of the Rotman School of Management.

John Riviere

John Riviere

Chief Financial Officer
Executive Vice President of Organization Management

John Riviere provides financial stewardship for the organization, ensuring it remains financially stable while investing strategically to bring new value to Canada’s physicians and their family members. He oversees all aspects of financial reporting for the MD funds and PIM pools, regulatory compliance, and all tax and legal matters for the corporate group.

Mr. Riviere joined MD in 2012, bringing deep financial expertise and strong client-value orientation. In his recent past, Mr. Riviere served as Senior Vice President and CFO for the Health Care of Ontario Pension Plan, one of the largest public pension plans in Canada. He has also held various roles within several large financial services institutions including CIBC, CIBC Mellon and Bank of Nova Scotia.

Mr. Riviere graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, magna cum laude, and earned his Chartered Accountant designation two years later. He is also a graduate of the Wharton Business School, Advanced Management Program, and is a Chartered Director with the DeGroote School of Business.

Angie Hoang

Angie Hoang

Executive Vice President of Organization Experience

Angie Hoang provides leadership for MD’s strategy and culture. Her portfolio includes human resources, information technology, strategy, the Program Management Office (PMO), facilities management and employee experience.

Since joining MD in 2010, Ms. Hoang has led the organization’s transition to a more agile and continuous strategic-planning culture with a sharper focus on execution. She began her career at Nortel, where she spent 15 years establishing a strong foundation in technology and a passion for developing high-performing teams. Before coming to MD, she was director of the PMO Office for Cactus Commerce, a Microsoft e-commerce partner that provides professional services to large-scale retailers and business-to-business/business-to-consumer clients. Throughout her career, Ms. Hoang has built a reputation as a trusted advisor and influential leader.

Ms. Hoang holds a Bachelor of Math degree from the University of Waterloo.
